Skip winter from Ohio

I grew up in the Hocking Hills — an hour southeast of Columbus, where the January high barely breaks freezing and the sky is a flat grey from November to March. I came to Medellín for the first winter because I could work from anywhere and wanted to see if there was a place where the days didn't shrink to nine hours. There was. This is that site.

The logistics from Ohio

All three Ohio airports (CMH, CLE, CVG) route to Medellín with one stop — usually Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, or Panama City. Total travel time is about the same as flying to the West Coast. The time zone doesn't change: Colombia is on Eastern time in winter, with no daylight-saving shift, so your 9 a.m. call is still 9 a.m.

For anyone thinking about the tax side: the 183-day rule that matters is Colombia's, not Ohio's. Stay under 183 days in Colombia in a calendar year and you don't become a Colombian tax resident. Ohio's own rules for non-resident income are separate and worth checking with a CPA if you're self-employed — but a three-month winter stay doesn't trigger anything unusual.
